NYK has led the Japanese shipping industry consistently in volume handled
and destinations served through liner services. Our strengths in liner
services are fourfold:
1. Leadership in on-time service and breakage-free cargo handling,
attributable largely to our young fleet and to the intensive training our
crew members receive;
2. A vast network of offices, which enables us to offer hands-on
support for cargo rounding in every market;
3. A huge fleet-the largest liner fleet in the Japanese industry.
4. Our strategic “Grand Alliance” with four other container-shipping
leaders: Hapag-Lloyd; OOCL; P&O; MISC.

NYK’s corporate roots are in liner services, but our company diversified
long ago into tramper services. Today, liner and nonlinear services account
for roughly equal portions of the revenues that we earn form-shipping
business.
NYK has been a driving force in the specialization that has occurred in
cargo shipping. We operated some of Japan’s first specialized vessels for
liquefied natural gas (LNG) and the nation’s first specialized carrier for
liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). We were also the first company in the world
to put into service a specialized vessel for carrying woodchips. And we
operate the world’s largest fleet of car carriers.
We have assembled a tramper fleet of specialized vessels and multipurpose
vessels to handle any conceivable cargo. We put some of vessels at the
service of such customers as electric utilities and steel makers under
long-term contracts. We dispatch other vessels on a cargo-by-cargo basis.
Whatever the cargo and wherever it is needed, our fleet and route network
position us to deliver it quickly and safely.

As an ocean-shipping carrier, having a sophisticated intermodal
transportation system is an integral part for NYK line. But the NYK group
goes beyond carrier capability. The service line-up the NYK group holds
inside is good enough to encompass every logistical need and demands of
customers worldwide.

NYK began offering luxury ocean cruises in 1990. That was when we
commissioned Crystal Harmony, a 48,621-gross-ton cruise ship that
accommodates 960 passengers. Only tow years later, participants in a Los
Angeles Times survey named Crystal Harmony the worlds most popular cruise
ship.
*Diversified Businesses
Diversified operations are a big emphasis in our long-range business plan,
NYK 21. We put our seamanship to good use in vessels for leisure and
recreation. We put our property to good use in real estate development.
